One of the political parties contending the APC acronym, All
Progressives Congress of Nigeria, has dragged the Independent National
Electoral Commission to a Federal High Court in Abuja over its non
registration.
The commission's Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and its Secretary,
Alhaji Abdullahi Kaugama, were also named as respondents in the suit
filed by APCN's counsel, Mr. O.N Kelvin.
A copy of the court processes was obtained byThe PUNCHon Monday in Abuja.
Other respondents are chairmen of the Action Congress on Nigeria,
Chief Bisi Akande, his counterpart in the Congress for Progressive
Change, Prince Tony Momoh; Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party,
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, and six others.
The five plaintiffs, who sued for themselves and on behalf of the
APCNunder Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009, are
praying the court for the award of N500m as punitive, aggravated and
exemplary damages against the respondents jointly and severally.
They are also seeking a declaration that the excuses given by INEC and
its chairman for their refusal to register APCN as a political party
contravenes Section 40 of 1999 Constitution (as amended.)
